Our
History
Legal
Aid has been available to residents of Ontario since 1966. At
this time certificates were provided to economically
disadvantaged clients so they cold retain private bar lawyers
who were members of the legal aid panel.
By
the mid 1970's it became apparent that a certificate system
was not meeting the needs of clients with social assistance
problems, disability claims or landlord of tenant disputes.
In
1974 the Osler Report recommended the creation of more legal
aid clinics to assist clients with these specialized legal
problems. Unfortunately clinic development did not proceed in
a rapid or systematic fashion in the 1970's and 1980's.
The
passing of the Legal Services Act brought abut a rapid
expansion in the establishment of legal clinics throughout
Ontario. There are presently eighty (80) legal clinics
throughout the province.
In
2001 a Needs Assessment was completed for the Timmins-Temiskaming
region. A temporary office was opened in Timmins in March 2002
and by January 2003 clinic offices were fully operational in
Timmins, New Liskeard and Kirkland Lake.
